How to Cancel Your Netflix Subscription: Direct, Third-Party, or Pause

To cancel your Netflix subscription, sign in at netflix.com, open your Account page, and click Cancel Membership under Membership & Billing. That works only if Netflix bills you directly. If your monthly charge comes from Apple, Google Play, Roku, or a cable or internet provider, you have to cancel through that company instead. Either way, your account keeps working until the end of the billing cycle you’ve already paid for, so there’s no need to time it precisely.¹

Check a recent bank or credit card statement before you start. If the charge reads “Netflix,” use the direct method below. If it lists Apple, Google, Roku, or your cable or internet company, skip to the third-party section.

Cancel Directly Through Netflix

Open a browser or the Netflix mobile app and sign in. Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner and select Account. Under Membership & Billing, click Cancel Membership, then confirm on the next screen by clicking Finish Cancellation.¹

A confirmation screen appears once it goes through, and Netflix sends a confirmation email to the address on your account. Save both. If a charge shows up months later that shouldn’t be there, that confirmation is your proof the cancellation happened.²

Cancel Through a Third-Party Provider

Netflix’s own Cancel Membership button will not appear or will not do anything if someone else is collecting your payment. You need to cancel through them.

Apple (iPhone or iPad)

Open Settings, tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions. Find Netflix in the list and cancel from there. If Netflix is not in your Apple subscriptions, Apple isn’t the biller, and you should try a different method.³

Google Play (Android)

Open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile icon, and go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Find Netflix and follow the prompts.

Roku

Sign in to your Roku account at my.roku.com in a browser. Go to Manage your subscriptions, find Netflix, and click Cancel subscription.

Cable or Internet Provider

If Netflix is bundled through a provider like Comcast or T-Mobile, log in to that provider’s account portal and remove the Netflix add-on there. Interfaces differ by company, so if you can’t find the option quickly, calling the provider’s support line is usually faster than hunting through menus.⁴

What to Do If You Cannot Log In

Losing access to your login is one of the most common reasons people end up stuck paying. Netflix has a few recovery paths:

If you know your email but forgot your password, use the reset flow at netflix.com/LoginHelp.
If you forgot the email on the account, go to netflix.com/LoginHelp, choose “I don’t remember my email or phone,” and enter your name plus the credit or debit card being charged. Netflix will try to match it.⁵
If the reset link goes to an email you can no longer open, contact Netflix customer service directly.⁵
If you were billed through a third party or paid with a gift card, contact Netflix customer service. The self-service tool only matches direct credit or debit card billing.

Disputing the charge with your bank should be a last resort. A disputed charge doesn’t formally close the account and can complicate any future resubscription.

Pause Instead of Cancel

If you only need a break, the pause option shows up during the cancellation flow before you finalize anything. A pause runs up to 30 days initially, stops billing during that window, and leaves profiles, watch history, and preferences intact. About a week before it expires, Netflix lets you extend, up to three months total. After that you either resume or cancel outright.

Pause isn’t available on every plan, and if you’ve already used your three months, it won’t appear as an option. Even a full cancellation keeps your data around for about ten months, so coming back later is still simple.

What Happens After You Cancel

Cancellation doesn’t cut off access right away. You keep streaming until the end of the billing period you’ve already paid for. If your renewal falls on the 15th and you cancel on the 3rd, you have twelve more days of access.¹

One exception: if your account is already on hold, for example after a failed payment, canceling closes it immediately with no remaining access.¹

Netflix doesn’t issue prorated refunds for unused time in a billing cycle. Canceling mid-month means you keep access through the end of that month, but you won’t get money back for the days you don’t use. Timing the cancellation to your renewal date doesn’t save anything and isn’t necessary.

After access ends, profiles, viewing history, saved lists, and game saves stay on file for about ten months. Resubscribe inside that window and everything is where you left it.⁶

Canceling for a Family Member Who Has Died

If you can sign in to the account, open the Account page and click Cancel Membership as you would for your own. Selecting “Sign out of all devices” closes any active sessions at the same time.⁷

If you can’t sign in, contact Netflix directly. You’ll need the email or phone number tied to the account and the full payment information currently on file. Support can process the cancellation from there.⁷

Permanently Deleting Your Data

A standard cancellation is not a data deletion. Netflix keeps your information for about ten months so you can come back easily. If you want it wiped sooner, email privacy@netflix.com after you’ve canceled, and Netflix will remove your viewing history, profile data, and personal details.⁸

Cancel the subscription first. A deletion request on its own doesn’t stop billing.
