To cancel your Duolingo subscription and get a refund, you have to work through the platform you originally signed up on: Apple handles iPhone and iPad subscriptions, Google handles Android, and Duolingo handles anything bought directly on its website. Cancellation and refunds are two separate requests. Canceling stops future charges. Getting money back for a charge that already hit your account is a second step, submitted through the same platform.
Picking the wrong platform is the single most common reason people think their subscription won’t cancel. If you don’t remember where you signed up, check which account shows the recurring charge: your Apple ID, your Google account, or your card statement with a charge from Duolingo directly.
Cancel on iPhone or iPad
Apple manages every App Store subscription, so cancellation happens in your device settings, not inside the Duolingo app.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select Duolingo.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
If there’s no Cancel button and you see an expiration date in red instead, the subscription is already canceled. Timing matters: you have to cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid the next charge. Miss that window and Apple processes the payment, which pushes you into the refund process instead.1Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
Cancel on Android
Google Play works the same way. Cancel through the Play Store, not through Duolingo.
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select Duolingo and tap Cancel subscription.
Confirm through the prompts. Your Super Duolingo features stay active through the end of the billing period you already paid for.
Cancel on the Duolingo Website
If you signed up at duolingo.com with a card or PayPal, neither Apple nor Google can help. Log in on a desktop browser, go to your settings, and open the subscription tab. The cancellation option is there, and you keep access through the rest of your paid period.2Duolingo. How Do I Cancel My Super Duolingo Subscription?
Canceling During the Free Trial
Super Duolingo comes with a one-week free trial, and your account is charged automatically on Day 7 unless you cancel first.3Duolingo. Super Duolingo Aim to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Most surprise charges come from people forgetting the deadline. If you’re unsure whether you want to keep it, cancel right after signing up. You still get the full seven days, and there’s no risk of an unwanted renewal.
Request a Refund
Canceling doesn’t refund charges you’ve already been billed for. That’s a separate request, and the process depends on where you paid.
Apple Refunds
Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, click “I’d like to,” and choose “Request a refund.”4Apple Support. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple Pick the Duolingo charge and a reason, such as an accidental purchase or an unintended renewal after a trial.
Apple typically responds within 24 to 48 hours.5Apple Support. Check the Status of a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple Approval isn’t guaranteed on subscriptions, but requests submitted shortly after an unwanted charge, especially a forgotten trial, have a reasonable chance. If approved, how quickly the money returns depends on your payment method.
Google Play Refunds
Google has a dedicated tool at support.google.com/googleplay/workflow/9813244. Sign in, find the Duolingo charge, submit a reason.6Google Help. Request Your Google Play Refund
Google usually decides in one to four days. If approved, most refunds process within 10 business days, depending on your payment method.7Google Help. Check the Status of a Refund Request for Google Play That window is how long the money takes to land, not how long Google takes to decide.
Duolingo Website Refunds
If you paid on the web, contact Duolingo’s billing team directly. Log in on a browser, go to the Super Duolingo section, and use the support contact option near the bottom. Instructions are also posted at duolingo.com/help/how-do-I-request-a-refund. Describe your situation in the email. Web requests are reviewed manually, so expect a slower response than the Apple or Google systems.
Family Plan Cancellations
Only the person who set up the Family Plan can cancel it or request a refund. If you’re a secondary member, the subscription tools aren’t available to you, and you’ll need the plan manager to handle it. Leaving the family group on your own doesn’t stop the billing.8Duolingo. Family Plan
What You Keep After Canceling
Canceling doesn’t delete your account or erase progress. Your streak, completed lessons, and XP all stay. A streak only breaks if you miss a full day of practice, which is unrelated to your subscription.
What you lose are the paid features. Once the paid period ends, you go back to free Duolingo: ads return, hearts are limited again, and premium practice features go away. The work you did while subscribed carries over.
If Your Refund Is Denied
If Apple or Google turns you down, you can ask your credit card issuer about disputing the charge. Under federal law, you can dispute a billing error with your card issuer within 60 days of the charge appearing on your statement.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Can I Get a Refund on a Product or Service I Purchased With My Credit Card? Treat this as a last resort. Repeated chargebacks on app store purchases can get your account flagged or restricted, so work through the platform’s normal refund channel first.
