Check Who Is Actually Billing You
Look at your bank or credit card statement, or search your email for the sign-up receipt. A charge or pending charge from “OpenAI” means you subscribed through the website. “Apple.com/bill” means Apple is the biller. A line starting with “GOOGLE*” means Google Play. Cancel with that platform, not the others.

- Log in at chatgpt.com.
- Click your profile icon in the bottom-left and open Settings.
- Select Billing.
- Under “Cancel plan,” click Cancel and confirm when prompted.

Cancel Through Apple on iPhone or iPad

- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Find ChatGPT in the list and tap it.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll down.
Apple’s own guidance says trial cancellations need to happen at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent the charge.3Apple Support. Cancel Through Google Play on Android

- Open the Google Play app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Find ChatGPT and tap it.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

Confirm the Cancellation Actually Went Through
After you cancel on any platform, you should get a confirmation email from that platform. Save it. That email is your proof if a charge posts anyway and you need to dispute it with your bank, with OpenAI, or with the app store.
Your account itself does not disappear. Once the trial period ends, the account drops to the free tier: you can still sign in and use ChatGPT, but you lose the higher-usage model limits, image generation, and other paid features that came with Plus.2OpenAI Help Center. Deleting Your Account Does Not Cancel the Trial
This is where people end up paying anyway. Deleting your OpenAI account does not reliably stop the trial from converting to a paid subscription. OpenAI’s own help article says deleting your account “should include” canceling an active subscription, and that hedged wording is the point: do not rely on it.5OpenAI Help Center. Cancel the subscription first, wait for the confirmation, and only then delete the account if you want to. Deleted accounts cannot be recovered, and you would lose your chat history permanently.5OpenAI Help Center. If You Already Got Charged
Missed the window? Your refund path depends on the biller.
For charges from OpenAI directly, the terms of use say subscription payments are non-refundable except where required by law, so a plain “I forgot to cancel” request will often be denied.6OpenAI. Approval is not guaranteed, but a trial that renewed by accident is a common reason refunds are approved.
