How to Cancel TXU Energy Service: Phone, Online, and Fees

To cancel TXU Energy, call 888-318-7936 or submit a cancellation through the MyAccount portal on TXU’s website. Same-day cancellations are processed until 5 p.m., and not on Sundays or holidays, so time your request accordingly.1TXU Energy. Contact Us – Quickly Reach a Live Agent Before you do either, pull up your Electricity Facts Label. If you’re on a fixed-rate contract, an early termination fee of roughly $150 to $395 may apply depending on plan length.

What to Have Ready

Have your TXU account number from a recent bill, the full name on the account, and your security credentials, which is usually the last four digits of your Social Security number or a PIN you set at enrollment.

You’ll also need a specific service-end date so TXU can coordinate the final meter reading with your local transmission and distribution utility, plus a forwarding address. Your final bill and any deposit refund go to that address, so an error here means chasing your own money later.

Canceling TXU Energy by Phone

The most direct route is 888-318-7936. The agent verifies your identity, confirms the disconnection date, and reviews any remaining balance or termination fee. If you’re moving out of state, TXU specifically tells customers to use this phone line rather than the online portal.2TXU Energy. Transferring or Cancelling Your Service

TXU’s general residential customer service number, 866-278-4898, is available around the clock and can also handle the request. Just remember the 5 p.m. same-day cutoff, and that Sundays and holidays are out.1TXU Energy. Contact Us – Quickly Reach a Live Agent

Canceling Online Through MyAccount

If you’d rather skip the call, log in to MyAccount on TXU’s site, find the service cancellation or move-out option, and enter your final service date and forwarding address.2TXU Energy. Transferring or Cancelling Your Service The system generates a confirmation number when the request is submitted. Save it. If a charge shows up after your move-out date or your final bill looks wrong, that confirmation number is your proof the cancellation was logged on time.

Switching Providers vs. Moving Out

These are handled differently, and mixing them up is expensive.

If you’re staying at the same Texas address but switching to a different retail electric provider, you generally don’t need to call TXU. In Texas’s deregulated market, your new provider submits the switch request and the account moves automatically. TXU will still send a final bill, and you may still owe a termination fee if you’re breaking a contract, but the cancellation itself happens through enrollment with the new provider.

If you’re physically moving out, you do need to contact TXU to set a service stop date. Skip this step and TXU keeps billing you for electricity at the old address until someone else takes over service or you formally cancel. The meter doesn’t stop when you do.

Early Termination Fees

Every TXU fixed-rate plan has an Electricity Facts Label that states whether an early termination fee applies and how much it is, a disclosure required by Texas Administrative Code ยง25.475.3Cornell Law Institute. Texas Administrative Code 25.475 – General Retail Electric Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures to Residential and Small Commercial Customers Check the EFL before you cancel. As a rough guide, fees tend to run about $150 on 12-month plans, $295 on 24-month plans, and $395 on 36-month plans, though the exact figure depends on your specific product.

Two situations let you avoid the fee entirely:

Final Bill and Deposit Refund

After cancellation takes effect, your local transmission and distribution utility (Oncor, CenterPoint, or AEP Texas, depending on where you live) performs a final meter reading on your service-end date. TXU uses that reading to produce your last bill and mails it to your forwarding address.

If you paid a security deposit at enrollment, TXU must apply the deposit plus any accrued interest against your outstanding balance. Anything left over must be refunded to you. With agreement from you and the providers involved, the deposit can also be transferred to your new retail electric provider instead.5Public Utility Commission of Texas. If Your Final Bill Looks Wrong

Start with TXU. Most billing errors, whether a suspicious charge, a meter reading that doesn’t match your move-out date, or an early termination fee you think shouldn’t apply, get sorted out at that first call.

If TXU doesn’t resolve it, you can file an informal complaint with the Public Utility Commission of Texas.6Public Utility Commission of Texas. File A Complaint While the complaint is pending, TXU cannot send the disputed amount to collections, disconnect service over it, or report the disputed portion as delinquent to credit bureaus. You still have to pay any part of the bill you aren’t disputing; the protection only covers the contested amount.7Public Utility Commission of Texas.
