You can cancel a Planet Fitness membership in one of three ways: by walking into your home club, by sending a written cancellation letter through the mail, or, at some locations, by canceling online through your account. Every request routes through the club where you originally signed up, and to stop the next monthly charge, that club has to receive your cancellation by the 10th of the month.1Planet Fitness. What to Have Ready Before You Start
Pull these together first so nothing stalls your request past the billing cutoff:
- Your member ID number, printed on your key tag or visible in the Planet Fitness app
- The name and address of your home club (the location where you originally enrolled)
- The email address and phone number on file with your account
Canceling in Person
Walking into your home club and asking to cancel at the front desk is the most direct method. A staff member pulls up your account and hands you a cancellation form. Before you sign, read it: it should show your last billing date, any remaining fees, and the effective date of cancellation.
Ask for a printed copy of the signed form before you leave, and if the club offers email confirmation, make sure it lands in your inbox while you’re still at the desk. Keep that paperwork for at least two full billing cycles. Clerical mistakes happen, and without documentation, disputing a later charge becomes your word against the club’s.
Canceling by Mail
If you’ve moved away from your home club or would rather not go in, mail a cancellation letter directly to the club’s address. Include your full name, mailing address, phone number, email address, member ID number, and a clear statement that you’re requesting cancellation. Date and sign it by hand.
Send it USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. It costs a few dollars and gives you a tracking number plus a signed delivery confirmation, which is the strongest proof that your request was received and when. Regular mail works, but if the club later claims the letter never arrived, you have no way to push back.
If a cancellation confirmation doesn’t reach you within about ten business days after the delivery signature, call the club and reference your certified mail tracking number. That usually resolves it quickly.
Canceling Online
Some members can cancel through their online account, depending on membership type and home-club location.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ Log in on the Planet Fitness website, open your membership details, and look for a cancellation option. If you don’t see one, your club requires either the in-person or mail method.
When online cancellation is available, save or screenshot the confirmation page and any confirmation email. Planet Fitness franchises set their own policies, so availability varies from club to club.
The Billing Deadlines That Matter
Monthly dues are drafted on the 17th, and your home club must receive your cancellation by the 10th to stop that charge.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ Cancel on the 11th and you’ll pay for one more month. If you’re mailing your request, count backward: certified mail typically takes three to five business days, so send it early in the month to leave a margin.
There is also an annual fee, typically $49, that hits once a year on top of monthly dues.2Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness – A Gym and Fitness Club for Everyone Check your membership agreement or billing history to find out when it’s due, and time your cancellation to land before that date if you can. The annual fee is not refundable once charged.
Early Termination Fees
Month-to-month memberships with no commitment have no cancellation fee. Follow the process, meet the deadline, and you’re done.
If you signed a 12-month commitment plan and want out before the term expires, you’ll owe a buyout fee. It’s commonly $58, though it can run up to $100 at some franchise locations. The exact amount is in your membership agreement. Once the initial 12-month term ends, the membership typically rolls to month-to-month and the buyout fee no longer applies. If you’re only a month or two from the end of your commitment, waiting it out may cost less than paying the buyout.
Freezing Instead of Canceling
If the reason you want to cancel is temporary (travel, injury, a tight budget), a freeze may fit better than a cancellation. A standard freeze typically lasts one to three months. Medical or military circumstances may qualify for extensions of six months or more with documentation.
The cost varies. Some corporate-owned clubs allow free freezes for up to two months with a valid reason; franchise locations may charge $5 to $15 per month during the freeze. One detail worth confirming with your club: the annual fee can still be charged while your membership is frozen. Monthly dues pause; that once-a-year charge does not.
Cooling-Off Period for New Members
If you just signed up and want out immediately, check whether your state has a cooling-off period for gym contracts. Most states with gym-specific consumer protection laws allow three to five business days after signing to cancel for a full refund, and this window overrides the gym’s own contract terms.
The clock starts on the date you signed the agreement, not the date of your first visit. If you’re inside that window, contact your home club right away and follow up in writing. Once it closes, you’re back to the standard cancellation terms in your contract.
If You’re Charged After Canceling
Post-cancellation charges are among the most common Planet Fitness complaints, and they almost always come down to documentation. If you have your signed cancellation form or certified mail receipt, start with the home club: reference your proof and ask them to reverse the charge. If the club doesn’t cooperate, escalate to Planet Fitness corporate by email with your documentation attached.
If neither route works, file a formal dispute with your bank or credit card company. Most banks allow disputes within 30 to 90 days of the charge, so don’t wait. Include your cancellation confirmation and any records of your attempts to resolve the charge directly.
One thing not to do: block payments through your bank without actually canceling. A stop-payment does not cancel your contract. Charges keep accruing, late fees stack on top, and the balance can be sent to collections and appear on your credit report. Cancel through one of the official methods first, then handle any unauthorized charges as a separate dispute.
