How to Cancel Planet Fitness Membership: Deadlines, Buyout, and Methods

To cancel a Planet Fitness membership, you have to either visit your home club in person or send a written cancellation letter by certified mail. Phone, email, and app cancellations are not accepted for most members. The process takes only a few minutes, but the timing controls whether you walk away clean or owe another month’s dues, a $49 annual fee, or a $58 buyout.

The Two Ways to Cancel

In Person at Your Home Club

Go to the club where you originally signed up and tell the front desk you want to cancel. Staff will pull up your account and have you sign a cancellation form. Before you leave, ask for a printed or emailed copy of the cancellation confirmation. Keep it. If a charge shows up two months later, that confirmation is the fastest way to get it reversed.

By Certified Mail

If you can’t get to your home club, write a letter with your full name, address, phone number, membership ID (on your key tag or in the app), and a clear statement that you’re canceling. Mail it to your home club’s address, not to Planet Fitness corporate.

Send it certified with a return receipt requested. The return receipt proves when the club received your letter, which is what matters if there’s ever a dispute about whether you beat a billing deadline. Certified mail with a return receipt runs roughly $10 to $12 through USPS on top of regular postage.1United States Postal Service. Shipping Insurance and Delivery Services

Some members may be able to cancel online depending on their membership type and home club, but that option isn’t universally available.

The Two Deadlines That Decide Whether You Owe More

Planet Fitness bills monthly dues on the 17th. Your club must receive your cancellation by the 10th of the month to stop that month’s charge. The company allows up to seven business days to process billing changes, which is why the cutoff sits a full week before the charge date.2Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ

The annual fee is separate. To avoid it, cancellation has to be complete by the 25th of the month before your annual fee date. If your annual fee posts in July, you need to be canceled by June 25th. The annual fee is $49 for most memberships.3Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Home

These deadlines are firm. Cancel on the 11th and you owe another month. Cancel on the 26th and you eat the annual fee. The club is not obligated to make exceptions for a one-day miss, which is another reason to send certified mail well before the cutoff and keep the return receipt.

The $58 Buyout for Early Cancellation

Many memberships include a 12-month commitment. Cancel before that year is up and a $58 buyout applies on top of any dues owed for the current billing cycle.2Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ It isn’t negotiable under normal circumstances.

If your commitment ends in a month or two, do the math before paying it. Classic memberships start at $15 per month and PF Black Card memberships start at $24.99 per month.4Planet Fitness. Gym Memberships Two months of a Classic membership is $30, well under the $58 buyout. Once your commitment term ends, cancellation carries no buyout as long as you meet the monthly deadlines.

Situations That Can Waive the Buyout

Three situations commonly qualify to cancel early without the buyout, though eligibility depends on your contract and location:

  • Relocation more than 25 miles from any Planet Fitness location. Bring proof of your new address, such as a lease or utility bill.
  • Medical inability to use the gym. A doctor’s note confirming you can’t use the facilities can qualify you for cancellation without penalty.
  • Active-duty military deployment. Deployment orders typically override the commitment term, and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act adds federal protections for service members locked into contracts before deployment.

Bring the documentation to your first visit. The front desk isn’t going to waive a fee on your word alone.

Freeze Instead of Cancel If It’s Temporary

If the reason you want out is temporary — recovery from surgery, a few months of travel, a tight stretch financially — a freeze usually beats canceling. Freezing pauses monthly dues while keeping the membership active, which spares you a new enrollment fee when you come back.

Planet Fitness typically allows freezes up to three months at a time, with a maximum of six months per year. The annual fee still hits during a freeze, so if that date falls inside the pause, you’ll owe it. Freeze policies can vary by franchise, and some clubs require a medical or military reason to approve one. Ask at your home club, and if you need more than the initial three months, raise it with staff before the freeze expires.

Do Not Just Stop Paying

Closing your bank account, killing your debit card, or removing your payment method does not cancel the membership. The contract stays live. Planet Fitness attempts to charge, the payment fails, late fees accumulate, and the unpaid balance eventually goes to a third-party collection agency.

Once collections gets it, the damage jumps orders of magnitude beyond the original bill. A collection account can drop your credit score by 50 to 100 points or more and stays on your report for up to seven years from the date of the first missed payment. That’s a heavy price for a $15 monthly gym charge.

If you’re already in a billing dispute, cancel formally first, save your documentation, and then contest any charges you believe are unauthorized. Cutting off payments while the contract is still active makes the problem harder and more expensive to fix, not easier.

After You Cancel

Watch your bank account for at least two full billing cycles. If you canceled near a deadline, one last charge can be legitimate. Anything past that is a billing error.

Keep the cancellation confirmation and, if you mailed the letter, your certified mail return receipt. If an unexpected charge shows up, contact the club manager first with that documentation. Most billing disputes are clerical and resolve quickly once you can prove the cancellation date.

If the club won’t reverse a charge after you’ve shown proof, file a dispute with your bank or credit card company; your confirmation and return receipt are the evidence that the charge came after you ended the agreement. You can also file a complaint with your state attorney general’s consumer protection office, which handles health club contract disputes routinely.
