How to Cancel Garbage Service: Fees, Bin Return, and Final Bill

To cancel your garbage service, call your hauler with your account number in hand, request a final service date, schedule a pickup for their bins, and get a confirmation number in writing. That’s the short version. What determines whether the cancellation is clean or expensive is the paperwork behind it: whether your service is private or municipal, whether you’re on a residential subscription or a commercial contract, and whether you’ve prepaid.

First, Is Your Service Private or Municipal?

This is the gate. Many cities and counties run their own sanitation departments and fund collection through property taxes or a line on your water bill. If the truck carries a city seal and there’s no separate trash invoice, you likely have municipal service, and “canceling” may not be an option unless the property is being sold or left vacant. Some local ordinances require every occupied home to maintain active waste service, and ignoring that can trigger code violations and escalating fines.

Private haulers like WM (formerly Waste Management) and Republic Services operate under individual service agreements with each customer. If you signed up directly and get a separate bill, you have private service and can cancel by following the hauler’s process. One wrinkle: a private company may hold an exclusive franchise with your city, so you have a private contract but may still be barred from switching to a competitor or dropping service entirely. Call your local sanitation department if you’re unsure which situation applies.

What to Have Ready Before You Call

Your account number is the most important piece. It’s printed on your invoice, usually in the top right corner.1WM. What is a Customer ID? Some haulers also want the serial numbers printed on the front of your bins, so check them before you dial. Have your full service address and the final pickup date you want.

Then pull out your service agreement. Look for three things: the term length, the required notice period, and whether the contract auto-renews. Those details decide whether you walk away clean or owe an early termination charge. If you signed up online, the terms are usually linked from your account dashboard.

How to Submit the Cancellation

WM requires residential customers to call 866-964-2729 and use the automated phone system to end service and schedule container removal.2WM. Terms and Conditions for Residential Subscription Services Republic Services takes cancellations by phone at 844-737-8254, with cancellation effective on the last day of the month in which you call. Cancel on March 15 and service runs through March 30.3Republic Services. Service Terms For Residential Customers Smaller regional haulers may accept cancellations by online portal, email, or in person.

Whatever the method, get a confirmation number or a dated receipt. If the hauler has been difficult before, a certified letter with return receipt requested creates a paper trail proving they received your notice. Don’t just stop paying and assume the account closes on its own. Unpaid balances can be sent to collections and hit your credit even if you thought you’d canceled.

The Three-Day Rescission Window

If you just signed up and immediately want out, both WM and Republic Services give new customers three business days to cancel without any charges, excluding weekends and holidays.2WM. Terms and Conditions for Residential Subscription Services3Republic Services. Service Terms For Residential Customers Act inside that window and you owe nothing.

Early Termination Fees

Residential subscribers generally face minimal penalties. WM’s residential terms allow customers to cancel after any billing period without penalty when the company raises prices.2WM. Terms and Conditions for Residential Subscription Services Republic Services’ residential terms don’t mention early termination fees beyond the container removal charge.3Republic Services. Commercial contracts are another matter. WM’s commercial terms include a liquidated damages clause charging the average of your last six monthly bills multiplied by six if you cancel with six or more months remaining. If fewer than six months remain, the multiplier drops to the number of months left.4WM. Terms and Conditions for Commercial and Roll-Off Commercial deals also commonly auto-renew unless you give notice before a specific deadline, so the timing of your cancellation matters as much as the fact of it.

Auto-Renewal and Click-to-Cancel Protections

Most commercial waste contracts renew automatically if you miss a notice window that closes well before the expiration date. Miss it by a day and you can be locked in another year. A growing number of states have auto-renewal laws requiring companies to send advance notice, typically 30 to 60 days before the renewal deadline. If the hauler skipped that notice, the renewal may not be enforceable. Check whether your state has such a law before assuming you’re stuck.

At the federal level, the FTC finalized its “click-to-cancel” rule in late 2024, requiring sellers of recurring subscriptions to make cancellation as easy as sign-up.5Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule Making It Easier for Consumers to End Recurring Subscriptions and Memberships If you signed up online and the company now insists you can only cancel by mailing a letter or sitting through a retention call, that rule may be on your side.

Returning the Bins

The trash, recycling, and compost containers on your property belong to the hauler. When you cancel, they schedule a pickup to retrieve them. Put the containers at the curb, empty, on the designated retrieval day. If they’re behind a locked gate the hauler can’t reach, you may be billed for the equipment.

Republic Services caps its container removal fee at $75 per container.3Republic Services. Service Terms For Residential Customers WM also charges a cart removal fee that varies by location.2WM. Terms and Conditions for Residential Subscription Services These are standard fees, not penalties. If the hauler eventually writes off unrecovered bins as lost, though, a separate replacement charge can land on top. Ask for the specific retrieval date when you confirm the cancellation and put it on your calendar.

Schedule a Final Bulk Pickup If You Need One

If you’re canceling because you’re moving, arrange any bulk pickup before service ends. WM lets customers request bulk pickups through their online account, live chat, or phone, with pricing that varies by area and item.6WM. Bulk Trash Pickup and Large Trash Removal In some areas the local government handles bulk pickup instead of the private hauler, so check both.

The Final Bill

Your last invoice covers any remaining balance through the final service date. Refunds on prepaid service depend on the contract. WM’s residential terms say prepaid monthly or quarterly service will not be refunded on cancellation unless the law requires it, though annual prepaid subscriptions get a prorated refund for unused days.2WM. Terms and Conditions for Residential Subscription Services Republic Services refunds prepaid charges if you cancel within the initial three-day rescission period, minus services already rendered.3Republic Services. Service Terms For Residential Customers On a quarterly or annual plan, timing the cancellation near the end of a billing cycle limits what you lose.

Watch for overweight surcharges on the last pickup. Some haulers charge $60 or more per ton over the limit, and thresholds for standard residential carts can be as low as a few hundred pounds. If you’re clearing out a house, a one-time bulk pickup is usually cheaper than an overweight penalty.

Check your account for about two months after the final payment clears. Billing errors happen while accounts close. If a charge appears after your confirmed cancellation date, your confirmation number or certified mail receipt is the proof that the account should have been closed already.

Canceling for a Deceased Account Holder

If you’re closing service for someone who has died, the hauler will ask for documentation of the death and your authority to act on the estate. That typically means a death certificate plus either letters testamentary (with a will) or letters of administration (without one), and your own identification. Once the paperwork checks out, they should process the closure like any other cancellation. If a new occupant is establishing service, ask whether any setup fees can be waived.
