To cancel Southern California Edison service, submit a stop request through SCE’s online Move Center or call 1-800-655-4555. Both channels take only a few minutes if you have your account number, the service address as it appears on your bill, your chosen stop date, and a forwarding address ready. Getting the stop date right and handling a few loose ends, like autopay, a deposit, or a solar true-up, is where most of the money is won or lost.
What You Need Before You Cancel
Pull out a recent bill or open My Account. Your SCE account number sits in the upper-right corner of the bill and also appears in your online dashboard. You’ll need the service address exactly as SCE has it, because that’s how the utility locates the correct meter.
Pick your stop date before you start. The Move Center lets you schedule a stop up to 30 days out, so you can align it with a lease end date or closing day.1Southern California Edison. Request and View Start/Stop Service Date Match the date to when you actually hand over the property. Leave service active past your move-out and you’ll be billed for whatever the next occupant uses until the next meter read.
Have a forwarding address ready too. SCE mails your closing bill and any deposit refund there, and an unpaid final bill that never reaches you can end up in collections.
Canceling Online Through the Move Center
Open SCE’s Start, Stop or Move Service page and choose “Stop Service For Your Home,” or the business equivalent if you’re a commercial customer.2Southern California Edison. Move Center – Turn On, Turn Off, or Transfer Service Log into My Account when prompted, enter your stop date, add your forwarding address, then review the summary screen carefully before confirming.
The system generates a confirmation number once you submit. Screenshot it or write it down. If a billing dispute comes up later, that number is your proof that you asked to stop service on a specific date.
One limitation to know: SCE’s mobile app doesn’t support stopping service. The app handles bill payments, outage reporting, and account alerts, so you’ll need the full website or a phone call to actually cancel.3Southern California Edison. Download the SCE Mobile App
Canceling by Phone
Call 1-800-655-4555. The line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.4Edison International. General Inquiries Say “stop service” at the automated prompt, or work through the residential menu to reach an agent. They’ll verify your identity, confirm the stop date, and give you a verbal reference number. Ask for that number if it isn’t offered.
Phone requests run through the same back-end as online submissions. The advantage is being able to ask questions in the moment, especially if you’re on a special rate program or have solar and aren’t sure how the final settlement will land.
Your Final Bill and Deposit Refund
After the stop date, SCE performs a final meter read and issues a closing bill for all electricity used up to that point. You’re responsible for that usage whether or not you were still living there.
If you paid a security deposit when you opened the account, SCE applies it against any balance on the final bill. Anything left over gets mailed to your forwarding address with the closing bill within 30 days of the account closing.5Southern California Edison. When Will I Receive My Deposit Refund After Turning Off Service
Cancel autopay separately. It doesn’t automatically end when you close the account, so log into My Account and turn it off yourself to avoid a stray charge or a payment posted to a closed account.6Southern California Edison. Cancel Auto Pay Enrollment
If You’re on Budget Billing or Have Solar
Closing an account on SCE’s Budget Billing Plan triggers an immediate reconciliation. Whatever gap exists between your actual usage and the level payments you’ve made becomes due on the closing statement.7Southern California Edison. Budget Billing Plan FAQ That can be a surprise after a hot summer when air conditioning has pushed your real usage well above your fixed monthly payment. If you’ve been overpaying, the credit applies to the final bill, and any remainder comes back with the closing statement.
Solar customers on Net Energy Metering are on a 12-month billing cycle with an annual true-up. Cancel mid-cycle and SCE settles the net energy balance at that point instead of waiting for the anniversary. If you consumed more than your panels produced during the partial cycle, you’ll owe the difference. If your panels ran a surplus, any payout comes at the Net Surplus Compensation rate, which is well below what you’d pay to buy electricity.8Southern California Edison. Understanding Your NEM Bill Timing the cancellation closer to the end of your annual cycle can make a real difference in the final number.
If You’re on CARE, FERA, or Medical Baseline
Moving to a new address inside SCE’s service territory? Don’t cancel and reapply. Submit a transfer request through the Move Center. Your CARE, FERA, or Medical Baseline enrollment carries over to the new address once the old account’s closing statement is issued and the transfer completes.9Southern California Edison. CARE/FERA, Medical Baseline, and Budget Assistant Enrollment
If you’re leaving SCE’s territory entirely, the enrollment ends with the account. You’ll need to apply for whatever comparable program your new utility offers, and eligibility rules may not match.
Keeping Records After the Account Closes
You can still reach up to 36 months of billing history through My Account after the account closes, including PDF copies of past bills.10Southern California Edison. View or Download Past Bills Download the final bill and at least the last 12 months of statements before your login lapses. Those records matter for taxes, landlord disputes, or confirming that your deposit came back the way it was supposed to.
Save your cancellation confirmation number somewhere outside your SCE login. If access ever expires, that number is the one piece of paper that ties your stop request to a specific date.
