To cancel a Chai subscription, go to the platform that bills you — the Apple App Store, Google Play, or Chai’s own website — and cancel there. The charge isn’t managed inside the Chai app, so you have to work through the storefront that processed your original payment. Cancel in the wrong place and the charges keep coming.
Deleting the App Doesn’t Stop the Charges
This is the mistake most people make. Uninstalling Chai from your phone removes the icon and nothing else. Apple and Google handle subscription billing separately from app installation, so the recurring charge continues on schedule whether the app is on your device or not. Cancel through your account settings first, then delete the app if you want to.
Find Out Where You Subscribed
Your cancellation path depends on which platform took your original payment. Subscribed on an iPhone or iPad? Apple is almost certainly the biller. Subscribed on Android? Google Play handles it. A smaller number of people signed up directly through Chai’s website, in which case Chai Research Corp. bills you itself.
The quickest way to confirm is to search your email for the original receipt. Apple receipts come from no_reply@email.apple.com, and Google receipts come from googleplay-noreply@google.com. If you find neither, look for a receipt from Chai directly. You can also open the Chai app, tap your profile icon, and check the settings area, which usually shows your subscription status and the email address tied to it.
Cancel Through Apple
On Your iPhone or iPad
Open Settings and tap your name at the top. Tap Subscriptions, find Chai in the list, and tap it. Scroll down and tap Cancel Subscription, then confirm. The status updates to show an expiration date instead of a renewal date.1Apple. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
From a Web Browser
If your Apple device isn’t handy, go to account.apple.com from any computer, sign in with the Apple ID you used to subscribe, and open your subscriptions. Select Chai and cancel from there. You’ll get a confirmation and see the expiration date.1Apple. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
Cancel Through Google Play
On Your Android Device
Open your device’s Settings app, tap Google, tap your name, and select Manage your Google Account. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Manage subscriptions. Find Chai, tap it, and tap Cancel subscription.2Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play
Google may ask why you’re leaving before confirming. Once confirmed, the subscription shows as canceled and won’t renew.
Pause Instead of Cancel
Google Play offers a pause option for some apps that stops billing for one week to three months and resumes automatically. If Pause payments appears when you select Chai, you can use it; if not, the developer hasn’t enabled it and cancellation is your only option.2Google Play Help. Cancel a Subscription Bought Directly From Chai
If you signed up on Chai’s website rather than an app store, Apple and Google can’t help. The billing relationship is with Chai Research Corp. Go to chai-research.com/unsubscribe and submit the email address on your account to send a stop request to Chai’s system.
If that doesn’t resolve it, email Chai support at hello@chai.ml with your account email and a clear statement that you want to cancel. If Chai doesn’t fix a billing problem, your fallback is disputing the charge with your bank or card issuer, though that should be a last resort because it can complicate your account standing.
What Happens After You Cancel
Apple and Google both send a confirmation email. Save it as proof in case a charge appears later. Access doesn’t cut off immediately; you keep the premium features until the end of the billing period you already paid for. Cancel two weeks into a monthly cycle and you still have roughly two weeks of access.
Once that period ends, the account drops to whatever free tier Chai offers. Chat history and the account itself generally stay intact, but premium features like unlimited messages or exclusive models become unavailable.
Requesting a Refund for a Past Charge
Canceling stops future charges. It doesn’t refund past ones. If you were charged after you thought you’d canceled, or a free trial converted to a paid plan without adequate notice, you can request a refund separately.
Apple
Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find the Chai charge in your purchase history, and select Request a refund. Pick the reason that fits and submit. Apple typically responds within 24 to 48 hours. There’s no publicly stated hard deadline, but Apple decides case by case and your chances drop the longer you wait.3Apple Support. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple
Google Play
Open Google Play, tap your profile icon, and select Help & feedback. Describe the charge you want refunded and follow the prompts. Google’s refund policies vary by purchase type and how recently the charge posted. For subscriptions, moving quickly gives you the best shot at approval.
If You’re on a Free Trial
Free trials are where most accidental subscriptions begin. A Chai trial converts to a paid plan automatically unless you cancel before it ends. The safest move is to cancel right after starting the trial. On both Apple and Google, canceling doesn’t cut short the trial — you keep the benefits through the trial period, and the automatic charge simply never fires.
