How Much Does It Cost to Translate a Book? Rates, Grants, and Budget

The cost to translate a book typically runs between $5,000 and $18,000 for a standard-length manuscript, with most professional translators charging $0.08 to $0.20 per word.¹ Where your project lands in that range depends mostly on four things: how long the book is, which language you’re translating into, how specialized the writing is, and whether the price includes editing and formatting or translation alone.

The Per-Word Math

Book translation is almost always priced by the source word. At the common $0.08 to $0.20 range, a 60,000-word novel works out to roughly $4,800 to $12,000, and a 75,000- to 90,000-word book to roughly $6,000 to $18,000.¹

Those figures are for translation only. A quote that also covers editing and proofreading (sometimes called a TEP workflow) costs more; each additional editorial round adds roughly 10 to 20 percent to the total.²

Broader professional translation rates in the United States span $0.09 to $0.40 per word, with the spread reflecting language, subject matter, and urgency.³ Literary work sits toward the lower end of that spectrum, partly because publishing runs on tighter margins than fields like legal or medical translation.

What Moves the Price Up or Down

Several factors shift a book translation quote significantly.

Language pair. Translating between English and a widely spoken language like Spanish or French costs less because more qualified translators compete for the work. Rarer pairs, such as English to Icelandic, Finnish, Thai, or Norwegian, can cost 30 to 50 percent more than baseline rates. The translator’s home market matters as well; Norwegian translators, working in a country where the average annual salary is roughly €64,800, charge considerably more than translators in lower-cost countries.¹⁴
Genre and complexity. A contemporary novel costs less than a book dense with historical references, technical terminology, or wordplay. Medical, legal, and technical translation runs $0.18 to $0.40 per word — well above the literary range — because it requires subject-matter expertise. Within literary work, poetry commands higher rates than prose; the Literary Translators’ Association of Canada recommends $0.35 per word for poetry and $0.25 per word for other genres in its 2026–2027 rate schedule.¹⁵
Turnaround time. Rush fees are standard. Tight deadlines or split deliveries can raise the total by 25 to 50 percent. A realistic schedule is one of the simplest ways to keep the bill down.²
File format. Editable Word documents are straightforward. Scanned pages, handwritten manuscripts, or complex layouts require extra processing time and often cost more, according to the American Translators Association.⁶

Costs Beyond the Translation Itself

Translation is the biggest line item, but a finished translated book usually needs editing, proofreading, formatting, and often a cover update. These add up.

Copyediting. Median rates run roughly $0.02 to $0.055 per word, or $33 to $75 per hour, per the Editorial Freelancers Association’s 2026 chart.⁷
Proofreading. Roughly $0.01 to $0.045 per word, or $29 to $75 per hour.⁷
Formatting and layout. Desktop publishing for a translated book runs about $3 to $10 per page depending on complexity. One English-to-German book translation service charges £150 for a print-ready layout and £100 for ebook formatting.²⁸
Cover adaptation. Translating text on an existing cover design typically costs $100 to several hundred dollars, depending on the design.

Freelancer or Agency?

Choosing between a translation agency and an independent freelancer is largely a choice between convenience and cost. Agencies typically charge 30 to 50 percent more than freelancers to cover project management, quality assurance, and multiple reviewers.¹ In exchange, they can handle multi-language projects, maintain translation memories that reduce costs on repeat work, and provide institutional guarantees if something goes wrong.

Freelancers generally charge $0.07 to $0.15 per source word for direct clients,⁹ though established literary specialists can match or exceed agency rates. Freelancers usually cover only one or two language pairs, may have limited availability, and leave more of the project management to you. For a single book going into one target language, a well-vetted freelancer is often the more economical route.

Ways to Pay Less

A few approaches can lower or defer the upfront cost, each with tradeoffs worth understanding before you commit.

Machine Translation With Human Post-Editing

Machine translation followed by human post-editing (MTPE) typically costs $0.05 to $0.10 per word and can cut translation expenses by up to 40 percent compared with fully human work.¹ The savings come with real quality concerns for books. Literary work depends on voice, tone, and cultural nuance, and professional translators who have used MTPE in literary contexts report that machine output constrains their creativity and can take as long to fix as translating from scratch.¹⁰ An academic study found that while post-edited machine translation met industry quality metrics, human translation scored higher on creativity and narrative engagement.¹¹ MTPE can be reasonable for high-volume, less style-sensitive material like technical or reference books. For fiction or poetry, most industry guidance still favors fully human translation.

Revenue-Share Platforms

If you cannot cover the upfront cost, Babelcube matches authors with translators on a pure revenue-share basis with no upfront fees. On the first $2,000 in net sales, the translator receives 50 percent, the author 30 percent, and Babelcube 20 percent; the author’s share climbs to 65 percent once cumulative sales pass $5,000.¹² Babelcube holds distribution rights to the translation for five years, and because translators are not paid guaranteed fees, the platform has drawn criticism regarding translation quality.¹³

Licensing Foreign Rights

Instead of paying for a translation yourself, you can license foreign rights to a publisher in the target market. That publisher pays an advance and ongoing royalties, typically around 10 percent, in exchange for the right to produce and sell a translated edition.14 If a literary agent brokers the deal, the standard commission is 20 percent, split between the primary agent and a local co-agent.¹⁵ You give up control of the translation and earn a smaller share of sales, but you pay nothing to produce it.

Grants That Offset the Cost

A meaningful share of literary translations into English are partially funded by grants; an Authors Guild survey found that 36 percent of translators reported their fee sometimes depended on the publisher receiving one.¹⁶ A few programs worth knowing:

PEN/Heim Translation Fund. Awards $4,000 each to ten translators a year for book-length works being translated into English. Since 2003 the fund has supported 270 projects from over 50 languages, and about 70 percent of funded works have gone on to be published.¹⁷
PEN Grant for Italian Literature. A $5,000 grant for the English translation of an Italian narrative prose work.¹⁸
NEA Translation Fellowships. The National Endowment for the Arts awards $10,000 to $25,000 for translation of literary prose, poetry, or drama into English. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a published translation track record.¹⁹

These are competitive and rarely cover the whole cost, but they can meaningfully reduce it, particularly for translations from underrepresented languages.

Rights You Need Before You Spend

One legal point comes before any budgeting. Under U.S. copyright law, a translation is a derivative work, and only the copyright holder can authorize one.²⁰ Publishing an unauthorized translation, including posting one online, is infringement. If the book is still under copyright and it’s not your own, you or the commissioning publisher must obtain written permission, typically through a licensing agreement that spells out territory, language, duration, and financial terms.¹⁴ Public-domain works are the exception; anyone can translate them and claim copyright in the resulting translation, provided it contains sufficient original expression.

A Realistic Budget for a 70,000-Word Book

Pulling the numbers together for a standard-length novel going into one language:

Translation only, common language pair: $5,600 to $14,000 at $0.08 to $0.20 per word.
Editing and proofreading: $1,000 to $4,000, depending on scope.
Formatting and layout: $250 to $750.
Rights acquisition, if you don’t own the copyright: Varies widely, from a modest advance for a niche title to a substantial licensing fee for a bestseller.

For a self-published author translating their own novel into a major European language, $5,000 is a reasonable floor for a bare-bones project using a competitively priced freelancer.²¹ A more polished result with professional editing and formatting will push toward $8,000 to $15,000. Rare language pairs, specialized subject matter, or rushed timelines can drive the total well above $18,000. If the budget is tight, a combination of grants, careful market selection, and a phased approach — translating a series one book at a time and reinvesting revenue — makes the investment more manageable.
