FedEx Priority Overnight: Delivery Times, Rates, and Cutoffs

FedEx Priority Overnight is the middle tier of FedEx’s three next-business-day services, delivering by 10:30 a.m. to most U.S. commercial addresses and by noon to most residences.¹ Rates start around $45 for a one-pound package on a short route and climb with weight and distance, so the service fits shipments that need to arrive the following morning but don’t require an 8:00 a.m. drop.

Delivery Time Commitments

The commitment depends on the destination. Commercial addresses across most of the contiguous U.S. receive packages by 10:30 a.m. Residential addresses get a noon commitment regardless of location.¹ Some commercial ZIP codes in less-connected service areas carry a noon or even 5:00 p.m. commitment instead of 10:30 a.m.²

The service runs Monday through Friday. A package shipped Friday arrives Monday unless you pay for the Saturday delivery option, which carries its own surcharge. Saturday commitment times are noon, 1:30 p.m., or 5:00 p.m. depending on the destination’s service area.²

Alaska, Hawaii, and Territories

Priority Overnight covers all 50 states, but deliveries to and from certain ZIP codes in Alaska and Hawaii may arrive later than the standard commitments posted for the contiguous U.S.¹ FedEx doesn’t publish a single blanket time for these states. Enter the specific origin and destination ZIP codes on the FedEx website to see the actual window for your route.

How It Compares to FedEx’s Other Overnight Services

FedEx runs three next-day tiers, and the naming can blur together. The difference is really about how early the package arrives.

FedEx First Overnight is the fastest and most expensive. It delivers as early as 8:00 a.m. in major metros, with later windows up to 2:00 p.m. for extended locations.
FedEx Priority Overnight, the mid-tier, delivers by 10:30 a.m. to most businesses and noon to residences.
FedEx Standard Overnight is the most affordable next-day option, delivering by 5:00 p.m. to businesses and 8:00 p.m. to residences.¹

If the recipient just needs the package sometime tomorrow, Standard Overnight saves real money. If they need it before the office opens, First Overnight is the upgrade.

Pricing and What Drives Cost

Rates are based on package weight, the distance zone between origin and destination, and whether actual or dimensional weight is higher. Published 2026 list rates for a one-pound package range from $45.22 in Zone 2 to well over $85 in Zone 4. A 50-pound package in Zone 2 runs around $169; the same weight in Zone 3 climbs to roughly $244.³ These are list rates before any negotiated discounts, which high-volume shippers almost always have.

Dimensional weight often catches shippers off guard. FedEx uses a divisor of 139: multiply length, width, and height in inches, then divide by 139. If that number exceeds the actual weight, you’re billed at the dimensional weight. A large but light box can easily cost double what the scale reads.

Common surcharges stack on the base rate: residential delivery fees, Saturday delivery charges, additional handling fees for oversized or irregular packages, and weekly fuel surcharges. Measuring accurately before generating a label prevents billing surprises, because FedEx audits dimensions at its hubs and adjusts charges when the recorded label figures are off.

FedEx One Rate as a Flat-Rate Alternative

If your shipment fits inside FedEx-branded packaging, FedEx One Rate lets you pay a flat price regardless of destination zone. Envelopes must weigh 10 pounds or less; paks, boxes, and tubes must weigh 50 pounds or less.⁴ This works well for heavier items traveling long distances, where zone-based pricing would otherwise be steep. The tradeoff is that you have to use FedEx’s specific packaging.

Weight and Size Limits

Each Priority Overnight package can weigh up to 150 pounds. The longest side cannot exceed 119 inches, and length plus girth cannot exceed 165 inches.⁵ Girth is twice the width plus twice the height. A box measuring 40 inches long, 20 wide, and 15 tall has a girth of 70 inches and a combined total of 110, well within limits.

Anything heavier than 150 pounds moves through FedEx Express Freight rather than Priority Overnight.

Holiday and Peak Season Impacts

FedEx adjusts both delivery commitments and its money-back guarantee during high-volume periods. During the 2025–2026 holiday season, the money-back guarantee was suspended from December 1, 2025, through January 12, 2026, for domestic services, and reinstated on January 13, 2026.⁶

Morning delivery commitments are also extended by 90 minutes around certain holidays. In 2026, that applies to Valentine’s Day (February 13–14), Mother’s Day (May 8–9), and Memorial Day (May 27–28). During the broader holiday shipping season from November 17, 2025, through January 3, 2026, all morning commitment times were pushed back by 90 minutes. Your printed label may still show the standard commitment time even when the extension is in effect, which matters if you’re counting on a specific arrival.⁶

The Money-Back Guarantee

Outside of suspension periods, Priority Overnight carries a money-back guarantee. If your package arrives after the committed delivery time, you can request a full refund of the transportation charges. The guarantee is strict; a delivery that’s one minute late qualifies. You have to actively request the refund, because FedEx doesn’t issue it automatically.⁶

The guarantee covers only the shipping cost itself, not any business losses caused by a late delivery. And FedEx suspends it during peak seasons and around major holidays, which happen to be exactly when delays are most likely.

Preparing the Label and Meeting the Cutoff

You create a label through FedEx Ship Manager online, the FedEx mobile app, or a physical airbill at a retail location. The system needs a complete street address at both ends. Priority Overnight does not deliver to P.O. boxes; the only FedEx service that delivers to domestic P.O. boxes is FedEx Ground Economy.⁷

Select FedEx Priority Overnight specifically when creating the label; the system won’t default to it. Enter accurate weight and dimensions, since FedEx audits these at its hubs and adjusts billing if the numbers differ from the label.

Getting your package into the FedEx network before the cutoff is what separates next-day delivery from two-day delivery. There’s no single universal cutoff. Most FedEx drop-off locations have a latest pickup time somewhere around 5:00 p.m., but locations near major airports and sorting hubs often accept packages later.¹ Check the specific location’s hours or call ahead. Missing the cutoff by five minutes turns your overnight shipment into a two-day shipment.

You have several ways to hand off the package:

FedEx drop boxes at thousands of locations. Collection times are posted on the box.
Retail locations, including FedEx Office stores, Walgreens, and other authorized locations, which can provide a printed receipt.
Scheduled courier pickup through fedex.com or by calling 1-800-463-3339. On-demand pickups carry a per-package fee unless you have a regular daily pickup agreement.

Signature Options

FedEx offers three signature levels, each adding more control over who accepts the package. Indirect Signature Required lets someone at the address, a neighbor, or a building manager sign, and the recipient can also pre-authorize release through FedEx Delivery Manager or by signing the door tag. Direct Signature Required means someone physically at the delivery address must sign in person, with no electronic acceptance or pre-authorized release. Adult Signature Required means the signer must be at least 21 and present a government-issued photo ID.⁸

What You Can’t Ship

Some items cannot go through FedEx at all. Tobacco and tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, loose tobacco, e-cigarettes, and related components, are prohibited. FedEx will not ship cannabis, THC products, or marijuana-derived CBD, even between states where those products are legal. Alcohol can only be shipped by licensed producers, wholesalers, or retailers enrolled in the FedEx alcohol shipping program; regular shippers cannot ship alcohol at all.⁹

Hazardous materials such as lithium batteries, dry ice, and flammable liquids can move through the service but require specific packaging, labeling, and documentation under IATA/ICAO regulations, and the shipper must be a trained hazmat employee.¹⁰ Dry ice used as a coolant for perishables counts as a dangerous good and triggers the same paperwork.

Declared Value and Filing Claims

Every FedEx Express shipment includes a default maximum declared value of $100 at no additional cost. If your package is worth more, you can purchase additional coverage. For U.S. Express packages, coverage costs $3.90 for declared values up to $300, then $1.00 per additional $100 above that. Declared value is not traditional insurance; it’s the maximum FedEx will pay if the shipment is lost or damaged, and you carry the burden of proving the item’s value.

If a package arrives damaged or with contents missing, you have 60 calendar days from the shipment date to file a claim. For packages that never arrive, the deadline is nine months from the shipment date. You’ll need the tracking number, and supporting documentation speeds things up: the original vendor invoice, a retail receipt, an itemized repair estimate, or serial numbers for lost merchandise. For damage claims, keep the original packaging and contents until the claim resolves, since FedEx may request an inspection.¹¹
