Dry Dock Costs: Yard Fees, Repairs, and Off-Hire Days

A routine scheduled dry dock for a small coastal vessel typically lands in the low six figures, while a large tanker or container ship going through a five-year special survey with meaningful steel work can push past a million dollars. Dry dock costs break into eight predictable buckets: facility and docking charges, hull cleaning and coatings, steel renewal, machinery overhaul, labor, classification survey fees, crew and logistics, and environmental compliance. What the total actually looks like depends on the vessel’s size and type, its age and condition, where the work is done, and, above all, what the surveyor finds once the hull is out of the water.

What the Yard Charges Before Any Repairs Start

The shipyard bills a set of baseline fees before a single weld is struck. Docking and undocking cover the physical move into and out of the facility, including tugs, line handlers, and dock crew. Lay-time is daily rent on the dock itself and runs whether productive work is happening or not. For smaller vessels, daily docking fees typically sit between a few thousand dollars and $5,000. Larger ships face daily lay-time of $5,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the yard’s capacity and location.

Utilities are usually billed separately. Shore power, fresh water, compressed air, and crane usage appear as line items at contractual rates agreed before arrival. Some yards fold crane time into lay-time; others charge per lift. These ancillary fees add up quietly, especially once the scope of work expands mid-project.

Hull Cleaning and Coatings

Hull work is the most visible part of a dry dock and one of the most expensive. High-pressure water blasting strips marine growth, slime, and loose paint. Steel grit or shot blasting follows, bringing the surface to a specific cleanliness grade under ISO 8501 standards before new coatings can adhere properly. On a Panamax-sized bulk carrier, the underwater hull area alone can exceed 6,000 square meters, so even modest per-square-meter rates produce large totals.

Anti-fouling paint goes on in multiple coats over a primer system. Material costs for anti-fouling on a midsize vessel commonly run into the tens of thousands of dollars, with labor adding substantially more. The coating choice has downstream consequences. A high-performance silicone-based system costs more upfront but lowers hull friction, which cuts fuel burn for the next several years. Owners who economize on coatings tend to pay it back in bunkers.

Regulation shapes the spec as well as the price. The IMO’s International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems prohibits organotin biocides, and since January 2023, coatings containing cybutryne are also banned. Ships with existing cybutryne-based coatings must either remove them or apply a sealer coat no later than 60 months after the last application.1International Maritime Organization. Steel Renewal

Steel renewal is usually the single largest variable cost in a dry dock. When corrosion or fatigue has thinned hull plating, ballast tank structures, or internal bulkheads below acceptable limits, those sections have to be cut out and replaced. The work requires certified welders, classification society approval of materials and procedures, and detailed thickness gauging to identify which plates need replacement.

Costs scale with the volume of steel involved. A vessel with well-maintained coatings in its ballast tanks might need little or no steel work. An older ship with poor coating condition in its saltwater ballast spaces can require tens of tons of renewal, driving costs into the hundreds of thousands. Class rules require that spaces where protective coatings have deteriorated to “poor” condition be internally examined and gauged at each annual survey, which often surfaces more steel work for the next dry dock.2Clasifications Register. Machinery Overhaul

Dry dock is the only practical opportunity to access certain systems. The propeller shaft, stern tube seals, rudder stock and bearings, bow and stern thrusters, and sea chest gratings all sit below the waterline or need the vessel stationary for extended periods. Main engine work isn’t strictly tied to dry docking, but it’s often scheduled alongside to minimize total out-of-service time.

Propeller removal, inspection, and balancing is standard during a special survey. Cavitation damage or edge erosion pushes cost up through reconditioning or replacement. Fin stabilizers and their hydraulics, sea valves, and overboard discharge fittings also get pulled, inspected, and rebuilt as needed. The machinery bill depends on the vessel’s age, trading pattern, and how well the crew has maintained these systems between dry docks.

Labor and Why Geography Matters

Labor threads through every other cost component and also stands on its own because rates swing so dramatically by location and specialty. Pipe fitters, machinists, electricians, marine riggers, blasters, painters, and welders all bill through the yard. Base hourly rates carry shipyard overhead and profit, and in many yards the workforce operates under collective bargaining agreements that set minimum crew sizes and overtime rules.

Specialized work commands premium rates. A certified diver, a turbine technician rebuilding a turbocharger, or a propeller balancing specialist all bill well above standard yard trades. Overtime is virtually guaranteed when scope exceeds planned duration, and overtime rates in most yards jump 50 to 100 percent above base. A yard in Zhoushan might charge half what a comparable facility in Rotterdam charges for the same scope of steel renewal, which is why many owners will sail a vessel thousands of miles to dry dock in a lower-cost region.

Classification Survey Fees

Classification societies charge fees for every survey conducted during the dry dock. Their surveyors inspect hull structure, machinery installations, safety equipment, and navigation systems while the vessel is accessible out of the water. These fees are paid directly to the society and are separate from the shipyard’s charges. The amount depends on the vessel’s size, type, and which survey is due.

What the surveyor discovers is what drives the real cost, because those findings decide how much steel renewal and machinery work is needed to retain class.

Crew and Logistics

The crew doesn’t disappear while the vessel sits in dry dock. Depending on scope and duration, the vessel may be uninhabitable for days or weeks, and 20 or more seafarers may need hotels ashore, meals, and local transport in a port city that isn’t cheap. If the dry dock coincides with a crew change, repatriation flights and visas layer on top.

Provisions and stores offloaded before work begins and reloaded afterward create logistics costs that never appear in the yard’s quote but hit the owner’s budget anyway. Superintendents and technical managers travel to the yard to oversee the work, sometimes for the full duration. Fleet owners running multiple dry docks across different yards and time zones absorb real project management overhead on top of it all.

Environmental Compliance

Environmental rules have added a cost layer that barely existed a generation ago. Grit blasting and paint removal generate hazardous waste that must be contained, collected, and disposed of under local rules. Many jurisdictions require the yard to prevent any blast media or paint chips from entering the water, so containment systems, vacuum recovery, and licensed waste disposal are built into the price.

Ballast water management system retrofits are increasingly common during dry docks, particularly for older vessels coming into compliance with the IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention. Retrofit installation estimates range from roughly $25,000 for straightforward jobs on smaller vessels to nearly $200,000 for complex installations on larger ships, not counting the additional dry dock time.

What Actually Drives the Final Price

Size and Vessel Type

Vessel size correlates directly with every other cost component. A larger hull means more surface to blast and paint, more steel to inspect, bigger machinery to overhaul, and a larger dock to rent. Vessel type dictates complexity on top of that. An LNG carrier requires cryogenic system inspections a bulk carrier doesn’t. A chemical tanker’s cargo tank coatings need specialized materials and application procedures. Passenger vessels face safety equipment surveys cargo ships avoid.

Scope of Work

A routine intermediate dry dock and a full special survey can differ by a factor of three or more. A routine visit focused on hull cleaning, bottom inspection, and minor valve overhauls is relatively predictable. A special survey that uncovers extensive ballast tank corrosion can blow past budget once steel renewal starts. Unscheduled dry docks after a grounding, collision, or machinery casualty are the most expensive of all, because emergency mobilization, rushed procurement, and premium labor rates all apply at once.

Where You Dock

Geography moves the number as much as scope does. Yard labor rates in China and Southeast Asia run a fraction of those in Northern Europe or the United States, and the difference flows through every labor-heavy line item. When global demand for dock slots is high, yards in popular repair hubs charge premium prices and give less on contract terms.

Off-Hire Days

The scheduled duration is fixed in the contract, and overruns trigger penalties. But the yard bill isn’t the full financial pain. Every day the vessel is out of service is a day it earns nothing. For a vessel earning $15,000 to $40,000 per day in the charter market, a dry dock that runs ten days over doesn’t just add ten more days of lay-time, it removes ten days of revenue. That’s why owners routinely pay overtime premiums to compress the schedule. If overtime labor costs $10,000 extra per day but saves a $30,000 off-hire day, the math works.

Why the Bill Isn’t Optional

Dry docking is required by international convention. SOLAS Chapter I, Regulation 10 requires a minimum of two inspections of the outside of a cargo ship’s bottom during each five-year certificate period, with no more than 36 months between any two inspections.5Clasifications Register. Bottom inspections must normally be done with the ship in dry dock. For vessels under 15 years old, an in-water alternative may be permitted if conditions and equipment are satisfactory. For bulk carriers and oil tankers 15 years and over, dry docking is mandatory for every bottom inspection with no in-water alternative.7International Maritime Organization. How the Cost Hits the Books

Under US GAAP, day-to-day maintenance is expensed immediately, while major expenditures tied to regulatory dry docking, including steel replacement, required machinery inspections, facility rental, and third-party survey fees, may be capitalized as deferred dry-docking costs.8U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Correspondence Regarding Accounting for Dry-Docking Costs Most publicly traded shipping companies use the deferral method: capitalize the actual cost when incurred, then amortize on a straight-line basis over the period until the next scheduled dry dock, typically two and a half to five years.

One approach US GAAP explicitly prohibits is accruing the estimated cost of a future dry dock in advance. Owners can’t build a “dry dock reserve” through monthly accruals over the five-year cycle even though the expense is entirely predictable, which means a large cash outflow hits the statements in a concentrated period rather than being smoothed.

Under IFRS, IAS 16 requires a component approach. When a condition of continuing to operate the asset is performing regular major inspections, the cost of each inspection is recognized in the carrying amount of the asset as a replacement, and any remaining carrying amount from the previous inspection is derecognized. The dry dock component is depreciated over its own useful life, independent of the hull or machinery.9IFRS Foundation. IAS 16 Property, Plant and Equipment The component approach is mandatory under IFRS and rarely used under US GAAP even though it’s permitted.

For U.S. federal tax purposes, whether an expenditure is currently deductible or a capital improvement depreciated over time depends on its classification. Capitalized dry dock costs fall under the depreciation rules of the Internal Revenue Code, with the recovery period and method tied to the asset classification.10Internal Revenue Service. Publication 946 – How To Depreciate Property Clear allocation between routine maintenance and capital improvements matters, because the IRS can and does challenge the characterization of large repair expenditures.

The Contract Is Part of the Cost

Shipyard standard terms typically cap the yard’s liability for vessel damage during docking at an agreed maximum, often set in reasonable proportion to the vessel’s value and the scope of work. An owner who signs without negotiating that cap may find the yard’s exposure is a fraction of the vessel’s insured value if something goes wrong during docking or undocking.

Provisions worth close attention include penalty and bonus clauses for schedule adherence, unit rates for additional steel work discovered after the vessel enters the dock, escalation limits on labor rates for scope changes, and the process for approving extra work orders. The yard’s obligation to carry ship repairer’s liability insurance covering at least the agreed limitation of liability should be confirmed before work begins. The cheapest quote often comes with the weakest contract protections, and the cost of a poorly negotiated dry dock contract only surfaces when something goes sideways.
