Blackboard Is Really Two Products Right Now
Anthology, Blackboard’s parent company, is retiring the legacy “Original” course view in Fall 2026. Every institution still on Original must move to the redesigned “Ultra” experience by then. Some schools have already switched; others are running both views in parallel through Summer 2026.
This matters because a lot of the standard criticism of Blackboard (clunky navigation, too many clicks, dated visuals) is really about Original. Ultra is a ground-up redesign with an activity-stream interface that looks and feels like modern software. If you’re reading older reviews or talking to faculty who haven’t touched Ultra, their experience won’t reflect the platform going forward. The rest of this comparison focuses on Ultra, since that’s what every Blackboard institution will be running by the end of 2026.
How the Two Platforms Feel Day to Day
Brightspace opens to a widget-based dashboard that institutions and individual users can rearrange. A course overview card, an announcements feed, a calendar, and a to-do list can all sit on one screen. A consistent top navigation bar lets you jump between courses without returning to the homepage, and once you learn where things live in one course, every other course works the same way.
Blackboard Ultra takes a different approach. Instead of a customizable widget grid, it presents an activity stream that surfaces recent updates, upcoming deadlines, and new grades in chronological order. Course pages use a single scrollable content list rather than nested folders, which makes structure flatter and faster to scan, though it can feel less organized for courses with large amounts of material.
The editing experience also differs. Brightspace separates the student view from the editing tools: you build content in an editor, then preview what students see. Ultra lets instructors toggle between student preview and editing mode inline. Building and Releasing Course Content

The gradebook is where the platforms diverge most. Brightspace automatically creates a grade item whenever you build a graded activity. Ultra does the same, but its gradebook also includes smart views and filtering that let you create custom displays — for example, only students below a certain threshold, or only grades in a specific category. Accommodations work similarly on both sides. Analytics: The Biggest Packaging Difference
This is where budget-constrained institutions should pay closest attention.
Ultra includes course activity reports as a built-in feature at no extra cost. Instructors see each student’s overall grade, hours spent in the course, days since last access, and number of missed due dates on a single screen. D2L offers Brightspace Pulse, designed primarily for students.
