Target gift cards do not expire, and Target does not deduct fees from the balance no matter how long the card sits unused. If you just found one in a drawer from years ago, the full remaining value is still yours to spend in stores or on Target.com.
What “No Expiration” Actually Covers
Target’s policy is that its gift cards never expire and never lose value over time, even if an expiration date happens to be printed on the card itself.1Target Help. Target also does not charge dormancy fees, inactivity fees, or service fees of any kind. Whatever was loaded on the card is what you have to spend, whether you use it next week or five years from now. How Target’s Policy Compares to Federal Law
Federal law already sets a floor. The Credit CARD Act of 2009, codified at 15 U.S.C. ยง 1693l-1, makes it illegal to sell a gift card with an expiration date earlier than five years after the card was issued or last loaded with funds. The same statute bars dormancy, inactivity, and service fees unless the card has gone unused for at least 12 months and the fee terms were clearly disclosed before purchase. Target goes past that baseline by removing any expiration date entirely and skipping fees altogether.
Prepaid Visa, Mastercard, and Amex Cards Are Different
Target stores also sell general-use prepaid cards branded by Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. These follow different rules than Target-branded gift cards. The loaded balance does not expire, but the card itself carries a “Good Thru” date printed on the front. A Note on State Unclaimed-Property Laws
Some states have unclaimed-property laws that could, in theory, require a retailer to turn over long-dormant gift card balances to the state. The rules vary: many states specifically exempt retail gift cards, while others treat them as abandoned property after three to five years of inactivity. Because Target maintains balances indefinitely, most cardholders never run into this.
Checking the Balance on an Old Card
Every Target gift card has a 15-digit card number and an 8-digit access number that works as a PIN. On a physical card, the card number is printed on the back and the access number sits under a silver scratch-off strip. On a digital eGiftCard, both numbers appear in the original delivery email.
Three ways to check the balance:
- Online at Target’s balance-check page on Target.com, using the card number and access number.
- By phone at 1-800-544-2943, following the automated prompts.
- In store, by asking a team member at any register to scan the card.
Stick to those official channels. Third-party balance-check sites are a common tool scammers use to harvest gift card numbers.
If the Card Is Lost or Damaged
If a Target gift card is lost, or if the barcode is too damaged to scan, you can request a replacement by calling 1-800-544-2943. Keeping the receipt, or the email confirmation for a digital card, is the single most useful thing you can do to protect the balance. Without one, replacing a lost card generally isn’t possible.
