The Budget car rental security deposit is a temporary hold Budget places on your credit or debit card at pickup, usually equal to the full estimated cost of your rental. It is not a charge. The funds are frozen as collateral, then released and replaced by the actual rental charge once you return the vehicle and the final bill is processed.
How Much Budget Will Hold
Budget’s terms let your card issuer reserve up to the greater of the estimated total rental charges or the deposit amount posted on signs at your pickup location. The estimate rolls in your daily rate, taxes, surcharges, and any add-ons you chose, such as insurance or GPS. For debit card rentals, the minimum hold is $100, which usually applies to insurance replacement rentals or prepaid reservations where most of the cost has already been collected.1Budget Car Rental. Can You Rent a Car with a Debit Card?
Premium vehicles — luxury sedans, large SUVs, specialty models — generally trigger larger holds because the estimated charges and replacement value are higher. The exact amount is set when your rental agreement is generated and the vehicle is assigned to you.2Budget Car Rental. Rental Terms and Conditions
If You Are 21 to 24
At most U.S. corporate-operated locations, Budget adds a $27-per-day underage surcharge for renters between 21 and 24. Because that surcharge lifts the estimated total, it also lifts the hold. A five-day rental could add $135 or more to the hold on top of the base cost.3Budget Car Rental. Requirements for Renting FAQs
Which Cards Budget Accepts at Pickup
To get the keys, you need a credit card or, at participating locations, a debit card in the primary renter’s name. Credit cards are accepted at every Budget location and are the simplest route: the card just needs enough available credit to cover both the rental estimate and the hold.4Budget Car Rental. Payment Options
Debit cards are accepted at many locations, but not all. Some offices only accept a debit card at return, not at pickup. Check your specific pickup location’s policy on Budget.com before you go.1Budget Car Rental. Can You Rent a Car with a Debit Card?
Prepaid debit cards and gift cards, including prepaid Visa and Mastercard products, cannot be used to secure the deposit. You can put them toward the final bill when you return the vehicle, but you still need a standard credit or debit card in your name at pickup.3Budget Car Rental. Requirements for Renting FAQs Budget’s payment information does not list Apple Pay, Google Pay, or other digital wallets as accepted methods for the pickup deposit, so plan to bring a physical card.
Extra Rules for Debit Card Renters
Debit card renters face conditions credit card renters do not. You generally have to be at least 25. Your linked account has to hold enough funds to cover the full hold at pickup, or the transaction is declined. At airport locations, you may also need to show a ticket or boarding pass and proof of a return flight aligned with your rental return date.1Budget Car Rental. Can You Rent a Car with a Debit Card?
At most U.S. locations, Budget also runs a credit check on debit card renters. If the check cannot be completed or the results are unfavorable, you will need a major credit card instead. If you have a security freeze on your credit report, lift it temporarily for pickup day or the check will fail.5Budget Car Rental. Credit Card and Billing Help
When the Hold Comes Off
After you return the car and Budget processes the final invoice, Budget notifies your card issuer to release the hold, and the actual rental cost posts as the real charge. Budget states that your bank may take up to two weeks to make the released funds available again.6Budget Car Rental. Budget Car Rental FAQs
Credit card holds tend to clear faster than debit holds, because authorization reversals move quickly through credit networks. Debit holds tie up actual cash in your checking account, and some banks use the full two weeks or longer to unfreeze it. That timing depends on your bank, not on Budget.
What Can Grow the Hold or the Final Charge
Keeping the Car Longer Than Planned
If you keep the vehicle past your scheduled return, Budget places additional holds to cover the expected extra charges. Up to three more holds can be added depending on how long you keep the car.7Budget Car Rental. Can You Rent a Car with a Debit Card?
If you know you need more time, call Budget at 800-824-6287 within seven hours of your original return time to extend the rental. A service fee applies, and your original rate may not be available. Miss that window and a $20-per-day late fee applies on top of the rental charges. Once you finally return the car, all holds are released and the actual total is charged.6Budget Car Rental. Damage to the Vehicle
If you return the car damaged and did not buy the Loss Damage Waiver at pickup, you are responsible for the full repair cost regardless of cause, including weather. Budget can charge either the estimated repair cost or, if it decides to sell the vehicle as-is, the gap between pre-damage fair market value and the sale price. Additional charges such as loss of use, administrative and appraisal fees, towing and storage, and diminished value can also apply, and these can easily exceed the original deposit hold. Report any damage to Budget as soon as it happens or you discover it; failing to report promptly is treated as a violation of your rental agreement.2Budget Car Rental. Rental Terms and Conditions

If Budget confirms the release but your bank still shows the funds as unavailable, the problem sits with your bank. Call and ask them to look for a release authorization from Budget, and give them your rental agreement number and return date so they can find the transaction.
If it still is not resolved, you have federal dispute rights. The Fair Credit Billing Act covers billing errors on credit card accounts, including holds or charges in the wrong amount. The Electronic Fund Transfer Act provides a similar dispute process for errors on a bank account statement tied to a debit card. Under both, you can submit a written dispute to your card issuer or bank identifying the error.9Federal Trade Commission. Credit and Your Consumer Rights
